In1980, Lakoff & Johnson put forward the conceptual metaphor theories in Metaphor We Live By,which opens a cognitive perspective for metaphor study. They consider the essence of metaphor as the process of cognition. Metaphor is not only a rhetorical method, but also a thinking mode and a cognitive tool. Metaphor can use concrete concepts to explain abstract concepts through cross-domain mapping. This thesis applies the conceptual metaphor theories of cognitive linguistics to analyze metaphorical expressions in Mrs. Dalloway. This thesis focuses on the three types of conceptual metaphors: structural metaphors, orientational metaphors and ontological metaphors. It aims to analyze the metaphorical phenomena in Mrs. Dalloway whereby revealing the mechanism that how conceptual metaphors formed in this novel.
