The Chinese Translation Of Marine English From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

With the yacht getting itself known to the public in China, the study on yacht design and construction gets more and more attention, thus learning the advanced theory and practical experience of yacht design from the west is the inevitable course towards getting Chinese influence promoted and discourse right developed in the global shipbuilding field. While the English-Chinese translation is one of the main ways of exchanging the information between the domestic and the western yacht construction industry. The author selects Chapter 6 in the Principle of Yacht Design as the translation material, and studies how the ostensive-inferential process is applied to the realization of clear logic,accurate wording,term normalization and high readability in the translation of marine English from the perspective of specialized vocabulary, complex construction and figures and tables under the framework of Relevance Theory. Accordingly, the author proposes six translation skills, namely, term searching,context-based relevance, amplification and conversion, logical deduction based division and combination, contextual relevance and contextual inference, expecting to enrich the study of English-Chinese translation of relative theoretical materials in the western ship design.
