The translation material is excerpted from the first chapter of Purity, which is a new novel written by Jonathan Franzen in September,2015.The protagonist of the novel,a girl from America,is called Purity, whose nickname is Pip.With Purity’s mysterious life being the main clue, the novel also centers on miracle life and intricate path of Pip’s boss Andreas, her father Tom and mother Annabelle. The Chinese version of Purity has not been available since it was published. The translation report is based on Skopos theory, taking the first chapter of literary work Purity as an example. It mainly explores the application of the theory in the translation practice and how to solve translation difficulties. And the report holds that it is feasible to apply Skopos theory to the translation of literary work.Combining the Skopos theory with the translation practice of Purity, the author of the report adjusts translation to target readers and keeps the information that the novel intends to convey.Under the guidance of Skopos theory, many translation problems are smoothly settled. In the translation report, three aspects are discussed and analyzed, namely the translation of proper names, vulgar language, and dialogues. When encountering proper names, vulgar language and dialogues, the translator should seek proper translation strategies from the target readers’ perspective, such as transliteration, annotation, adaptation and so on.In this way,the translation, conforming to the loyalty principle of Skopos theory,is more easily accepted by target readers for tallying with ways of expression, cultural features and linguistic norms of target language.
