The further development of globalization leads Western culture flowing over into China,to such an extent that some Chinese college students pursue Western festivals more than their native ones. This phenomenon makes scholars become worried that English learners tend to the Western cultural identification rather than the native. Therefore,it is vital to test the self-identity changes of the Chinese college English learners, and the influence on them. Before 1980 s,scholars put more emphases on how English learners acquired the professional skills. After that,Canadian famous scholars Lambert and Gardner firstly advocated that learners could undergo non-linguistic changes and linguistic changes as well, including cultural identity changes and self-identity changes, etc. In addition, they pointed out that learning motivation played the most important role in affecting non-linguistic changes. This idea helps scholars realize that it matters to guide English learners to enhance both the target culture awareness and the native one. Therefore, the author tries to make an empirical study on the correlation between learning motivation and self-identity changes, aiming at exploring the learning motivation of the Chinese university students, and how different learning motivations affect their self-identity changes.Junior English Majors from Wan Fang College Of Science & Technology Henan are taken as the research subject.Prof Gao Yihong and her team's questionnaire is used in the research. To meet the demand of the current research, amendments to the questionnaire are done to make it consist of two scales, the first of which is made up with 20 items aiming at finding out the main learning motivation of the research subjects, the second includes 20 items focusing on digging out what self-identity changes the subjects experience.SPSS is employed in the analysis.Through the analysis the writer finds that, first, the dominant learning motivation of the research subjects is individual development.Second, the most evident self-identity change of the research subjects is self-confidence change.Third, different English learning motivations do result in different self-identity changes which can be explained by the correlation between productive changes and learning situation motivation, individual development motivation, information media motivation.
