Watercolor,as an artistic form imported from foreign countries,has been introduced to China for more than 100 years.In the 9th National Artworks Exhibition held in 1999,watercolor was independently displayed as the third type of painting right behind the traditional Chinese painting and oil painting,marking that watercolor has changed its historic status as the "small type of painting".It’s worth noting that the rapid development of China’s watercolor figure painting has made great contributions to the advancement of watercolor’s status.By drawing reference from the realistic experience and manifestation skills of the traditional Chinese painting and oil painting,the watercolor figure painting has achieved a diversified development in the subject.Particularly,the subject concerning the minority has attracted more attention from the academic field and the society,which has become an important part of China’s watercolor figure painting.Tibet is a popular subject in the pattern of modern fine arts.In addition to policies of literature and art,Tibet’s unique natural environment,humanity and history,local conditions and customs as well as religious beliefs are important elements to attract and promote artists’desire of creation.The watercolor,as a promising type of painting,is not an exception.The discussion about the watercolor figure painting of Tibet subject in this article is aimed to tease out the development of watercolor figure painting of such subject in terms of its basic history,artistic features and inner relationship between Tibet’s natural environment and humanistic characteristics on the basis of the profound foundation of the Tibet-based painting.Therefore,the literature reading method,diagram analysis method,and comparative research method were adopted and a large number of data were collected to illustrate the development history of watercolor figure painting of Tibet’s minority and artistic achievements made at different stages in the longitudinal aspect.From the horizontal perspective,western watercolor figure paintings were compared with it,based on which the features,artistic achievements,feelings and experience about the watercolor figure painting of Tibet subject were summarized.In order to provide more theories to further guide the creation of watercolor figure painting of Tibet subject,create more excellent works,promote cultural exchanges between Tibetan people and other nationalities,and enhance the self-identity,integration and cohesive force between nations,this article hopes to focus more attention from painters and theory researchers of fine arts on such kind of subject,continually strengthen the group of talents specialized in the theoretical research of watercolor figure painting,improve Tibetan people’s theories of watercolor figure painting,provide assistance to future creation of watercolor figure painting of Tibetan minority and boost overall advancement of the watercolor figure painting creation in Tibet.
