This thesis is a research report on the translation of the excerpts of Defending the Line. The book is a football player’s biography. Therefore, the book not only has the features of sports text, but also has the features of biographical text. The author wrote the report on the basis of the translation of the first thirteen chapters. In the translation process, the main challenges that the author met were how to solve the lexical and syntactic problems in the source text.According to Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the author used some translation strategies to solve them. For the translation of terms, the author used literal translation to deal with it For the translation of soccer-related expressions, the author used free translation to make the translation readable if the literal translation didn’t work. The prepositions which expressed the action were converted into verbs, and the prepositional phrases could be translated into clauses.Such strategies could meet with the Chinese expressions. For the complex attributive clauses, the author mainly used division to translate them, which avoided long and confusing Chinese sentences and made the language concise. The author thinks that functional equivalence theory can guide the translation of sports biography better.According to the different problems, the translators can choose different translation strategies such as literal translation, free translation, conversion in the process of translation, which can accurately express the information of the original to the readers.Meanwhile, the author hopes the translation report can provide reference for translators who will translate such texts.
