| Compared with the general interpretation, government press conference interpretation has its own unique features and requirements. Its function determines that conveying information to the audience is the primary task.In this process, faced with limited time and large amount of information, interpreters, who serve as the bridge between the spokesperson and journalists, adopt all sorts of tactics to facilitate communication. In his Logic and Conversation(1975),Paul Grice proposes that talk exchanges are characteristically cooperative efforts of all the participants, and thus puts forward cooperative principle, which describes the maxim of quantity, quality, relation and manner needed to be observed to fulfill ideal communication.Consequently,as a communicative activity,in theory, government press conference interpretation should comply with this principle to achieve anticipated communicative result, but it is also not rare to see the violation of CP in practice.By means of specific case study on the press conference of Premier Li Keqiang in 2015,2016 and 2017,of Foreign Minister Wang Yi and of CPPCC in 2015 and the regular press conferences of the Foreign Ministry, this thesis discovers that the interpreter adopts the addition of subjects and connectives and free interpretation of culture-specific words to comply with CP.While, when under time pressure, the interpreter chooses to slightly violate the quantity maxim by omitting information of low importance in interpretation. But the entire interpretation doesn’t affect the communicative result. However, when encountering new network buzz, sometimes the improper interpretation provided by the interpreter hampers the comprehension. This thesis is written to help government press conference interpreters employ a flexible use of Cooperative Principle and deliver satisfactory interpretation,as well as make contribution to future study. |
