A Study On Translation Strategies For Feminism Discourse In Li Jingyi’s Translation A Thousand Splendid Suns

Influenced by the “cultural turn” of translation study,the field of translation study has been expanding constantly since 1980 s.Feminists use this opportunity to fight for female rights.Therefore,literary translation works serve as an important battlefield to speak for female.They begin to express their ideas actively through this platform to highlight their own social status by some special translation strategies,which mainly are intervention strategies proposed by Flotow.She defined and described the three radical feminist translation practices in Translation and Gender including supplementing,hijacking,prefacing and footnoting.A Thousand Splendid Suns,the second novel of Khaled Hosseini,has attracted the attention of American major media and become the best-seller of American Amazon’s ranking lists after its publication.Just as the comment of New York Times,it is powerful and unforgettable.The novel told the story of women’ s fight for their independence as the background of Afghanistan.Through the narration of two women’ s pain lives,Hosseini implies the love and women’ s bond help women to get rid of oppression from the patriarchy,then to achieve freedom and happiness they pursue.In China,A Thousand Splendid Suns is especially popular as well.After it was published in May 2007,Chinese famous translator Li Jihong firstly translated it in September2007.Then,Li Jingyi,a famous Taiwanese translator who graduated from the National Chengchi university in Taiwan translated A Thousand Splendid Suns again in 2008,whose version was sold both in Taiwan and Mainland.The two versions gained incredible sales volume on the Amazon and Jingdong website.Later on,Chinese scholars started to study the novel mainly from the perspective of feminism literature according the statistics of CKNI.Among them,there are five theses analyzing the Li Jihong’ s translation of the novel.However,there is few research about the Li Jingyi’ s version from the perspective of Feminist Translation Theory.With the enlightenment of these researches,the author takes Li Jingyi’ s version of A Thousand Splendid Suns as the study object to probe into the novel and its Chinese version from the perspective of the Feminist Translation Theory.The current study aims to analyze the strategies adopted by Li Jingyi for the reproduction of female consciousness of the sourcetext.Thus,it focuses on the comparison of Chinese version with the plots of English version,which reveal female consciousness.Through comparison and thorough analysis,the author draws the following conclusions:firstly,Li Jingyi’ s translation has the same progressive hierarchical sense as the original work in terms of the fight for female rights;Secondly,Flotow’ s intervention strategies,including supplementing,hijacking,footnoting and prefacing,provide the support for conveying the female consciousness of the original text in the process of translation.Besides,Li Jingyi presents the female consciousness of the original work by repeating and stressing the tone of words.Finally,Li Jingyi’ s translation version reflects the Afghan women’ s brave spirit of fighting for their liberation and independence in the turbulent Afghanistan period.What the translator does is regarded as an action speaking for the women’ s rights again.
