The Influence Of Cultural Frame Switching And Group Empathy On Intergroup Relations And Promotion Mechanism

Intergroup relations refer to the interaction between different social groups.For the Hui ethnic groups in Ningxia,they are not only familiar with the culture of this nation,but also familiar with the Han culture,which belongs to hui bicultural individuals.At the same time,it is found that group empathy is an important factor to promote intergroup relations.In this study,Hui bicultural individuals in Ningxia were recruited as our subjects,three experiments were designed to explore the different cultural frame switching effect among different bicultural identity integration(BII)individuals,the influence of cultural frame switching effects and group empathy on intergroup psychological distance,the influence of cultural frame switching effect、group empathy and imagine contact on group help willingness.In the first experiment,we explored the difference of Hui/Han cultural behavior between high BII and low BII individuals,by activating Chinese and Western cultural frame.This is 2(BII:high/low)x 2(culture frame:Hui/Han),a two factors between subjects design.Based on this results,we discussed the influence of cultural frame switching effect and the group of empathy on intergroup psychological distance in experiment two,with the culture materials and group empathy activating materials.It is 2(cultural frame switching effect:Yes/no)x 2(Group empathy:Yes/no)x 2(group:ingroup/outgroup),a three factors completely randomized experimental design.At last,experiment three displayed how to promote intergroup relationship,discussing the influence of cultural frame switching effect,group empathy and imagine contact on group help willingness.This is 2(cultural frame switching effect:Yes/no)x 3(imagine contact:other culture imagine contact/standard imagine contact/control)x 2(Group empathy:Yes/no),a three factors completely randomized experimental design.Here we highlights the role of other culture imagine contact.Based on the above three experiments,we get the following conclusions:(1)For high BII individuals,the score of their Hui cultural behavior is higher than those of Han cultural behavior under the Hui culture.Under the Han culture,their Han cultural behavior is significantly greater than those of Hui cultural behavior.For low BII individuals,the score of Hui culture behavior is significantly higher than those of Han cultural behavior under the Hui culture.And in Han culture,the Hui cultural behavior is still greater than the Han cultural behavior.This shows that the high BII individuals of Hui nationality have the ability to switch between the two cultural frames,while the low BII individuals of Hui nationality do not have the ability to switch between the two cultural frames.(2)The main effect of cultural frame switching effect,group empathy and in-out group are significant;the interaction between cultural frame switching effect and the in-out group is significant:when there is no cultural frame switching effect,compared with outgroup members,subjects have more closer psychological distance to ingroup members;Interaction between group empathy and in-out group is significant:in the absence of group empathy,subjects have more closer psychological distance to ingroup members than outgroup members;But,the interaction between cultural frame switching and group empathy is not significant.In addition,the triple interaction among cultural frame switching effect,group empathy and in-out group is significant:when there is no cultural frame switching effect or group empathy,subjects have more closer psychological distance to ingroup members than outgroup members.The result shows that the ingroup preference is also exist in Hui nationality.At the same time,cultural frame switching effect and the group of empathy are good intervention methods in improving intergroup relations.(3)The main effect of cultural frame switching effect,empathy group and imagine contact is significant;The interaction of cultural frame switching and imagine contact is not significant;the interaction of cultural frame switching and group empathy is not significant,either;In addition,the interaction of group empathy and imagine contact is significant:under the control condition of imagine contact,empathy group has significantly higher help willingness than that without empathy group.The results show that imagine contact,especially other culture group and group empathy are important measures to promote intergroup prosocial behavior.
