A Study On The Male Images In Marriage Novels Of San Yan

"San yan",Chinese outstanding collection of vernacular short stories,among which are famous for the male images,created a large number of male figures.Contrary to the research on the female images in "San yan ",research on male images is slightly weak.This thesis,based on each related figure’s independence,classifies them by identity,social status,personality,hobbies,etc.to analyze the causes and meanings to ancient and modern world.Chapeau,firstly,makes a description of the history of male images in these novels and summarizes the current situation,praises the achievement,and points out the deficiencies of these novels.Secondly,chapeau makes an explanation to the purpose,meaning and creative ideas of the male-image research.Chapter one is about the types of male figures in the novels.In reference to the“self” in psychological concept and men’s degree of independence,the thesis divides them into dependent male figures,growing male images and independent male figures.Chapter two studies the three independent constructive causes of the male figures:the political,economic and cultural background in late Ming dynasty;the spallation of male figures in previous novel;Feng Meng-long’s personal experiences and ideas.Chapter three focus on the current significance of male figures in the novels.Through these male figures,the writer revealed the situation of men’s marriage;criticized males’ destructiveness to their dependent behavior;praised the independent marriage.
