William Golding, the Nobel Prize winner,is recognized as one of the most influential British writers after the war.Darkness Visible is an important novel, which is published in 1979 after more than 10 years of dormancy, and its achievement is as important as Lord of the Flies.Based on the previous research, this thesis will discuss the spatial writing in Darkness Visible and explore the origin of spatial writing, the characterization of spatial anxiety, the strategy of spatial form, and the value orientation of spatial writing by using space theory, referring to narrative analysis,psychoanalysis,close-reading and other related theories,in order to let the reader understand the creation background, the text structure, the practical value and social significance of the novel from a spatial perspective. The thesis falls into six parts. The introduction summarizes the research background, significance and framework, and provides with the introduction of the core concepts of "space" and "spatial anxiety".The first chapter concentrates on Golding's space writing. At the macroscopic angle, the spatial writing tradition in British literature provides him with a continuous creation inspiration. At the microcosmic angle, the vicious experience of delineated places in Golding's life conveys the emotional motive for his creation.According to the representability of physical space and the unrepresentability of psychological space, the second chapter deals with the alienation between space image and figure image in Darkness Visible, and illuminates that anxiety has not only long been in Golding's heart, but also projected to the marginalized figures. The third chapter focuses on the writing strategies of the inner and outer space of the text of Darkness Visible.By way of sketching out the double narrative structure and the architectural space,it explains how Golding extends the reader's spatial perception by taking advantage of the symbolism of spatial images and the spatial text structure. The fourth chapter mainly explores the value orientation of spatial writing in Darkness Visible, and argues that Golding puts the characters in modern society in order to show the constraint relationship between individual and space, and sketch the anxiety and the predicament of modern people.Golding hopes to lead the readers to a broader space of reflection, the religious self-reflection and self-atonement.The conclusion part sublimates the significance of Golding's spatial writing as a whole, thus reaffirming the value of this paper.
