During study, people monitor their learning.Judgments of learning is an important form of monitoring, and it is the prediction of memory performance about learning materials that individuals have learned in the later recall tests.JOLs predict later recall better if they are made after a delay, instead of immediately after study(the delayed JOL effect).Psychologists have proposed many theories to explain the mechanism of delayed JOL effect.Self-fulfilling prophecy hypothesis(SFP)belongs to the hypothesis of memory, and it is the key point of this research study. It is assumed that people make covert retrieval attempts from long-term memory before outputting their JOLs.The retrieval attempts increases the memory strength of the learning program.Compared with repetition, explicit testing can improve long-term memory and promote the effectiveness of memory. If delay JOL contains covert retrieval, whether JOL can also improve long-term memory? This study chooses college students as subjects and medium difficulty words as experimental materials, including three experiments to explore whether the delayed JOL can improve long-term memor’y.Experiment 1 and experiment 2 adopt the paradigm of test effect to investigate memory performance under three kinds of learning conditions(repeated learning, test, judgments of learning). In the process of daily learning, after a test or assessment,we often look at the answer to check whether these knowledge has be learned well.Experiment 3 introduces a immediate feedback after test or judgment of learning,to discuss whether the long-term memory is affected by feedback. The research conclusions are showed as follows:(1)Compared with repeated learning, taking a test promotes the long-term memory more, namely, recall performance under test condition is higher than that under repeated learning condition. After the initial acquisition level is improved, memory performance under delayed JOL condition is better than that under repeated learning condition.(2)Delayed judgments of learning can improve long-term memory, and the promotion of long-term memory is different from that of explicit testing. This provides empirical support to the SFP hypothesis.(3)Testing is an effective way of learning, but students are not aware of that.Students make covert retrieval attempts from long-term memory before outputting their JOLs.(4)Memory performance under test condition with feedback is better than that under test condition with no feedback;Memory performance under delayed JOL condition with feedback is better than that under delayed JOL condition with no feedback.
