Souls belated is selected from The Greater Inclination which is a collection of short stories written by Edith Wharton,a famous American woman writer.Based on the translation of the source text, this report is going to conclude with translation theories from the translation practice. The novel Souls belated successfully shapes the female image of Lydia, the heroine of the novel. It mainly tells the emotional entanglement among the three—Lydia, her ex-husband Tillotson, and her lover Gannet, which reveals the depressing environment of that time and expresses women's need of liberation in the bondage of marriage and embodies the awakening of female consciousness. The novel is a great one,of which the content is gripping, the themes are profound, the images of characters are bright and vivid and the language is lively and humorous.Novel translation is a special type of literary translation. It asks translators to satisfy the requirement of functional equivalence theory put forward by Eugene A.Nida,American famous translation theorist, that is translation consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style.Functional equivalence theory is the guidance theory of this report, which asks translators not to be confined to the original form, but to focus on the meaning and spirit of the source text and pay close attention to the reaction of the readers. This report mainly introduces the overall translation process with the guidance of functional equivalence theory, including the preparation before translating, translating procedure, case analysis and perception after translating. It is going to explore and analyze the selected examples from the source text and target text from lexical, syntactic and textual levels,so that it can provide beneficial reference for readers and translators:translators can applies the strategies of free translation and conversions of part of speech to achieve lexical equivalence;while on the syntactic level, the strategies of amplification, omission, division and combination are in use;and also in order to achieve equivalence on the textual levels, translators tries best to achieve the cohesion and coherence of the novel and pays close attention to the style of the novel.
