This report is on the basis of author's translating practice of Music,Informal Learning and the School: A New Classroom Pedagogy written by Lucy Green. One chapter of the book is chosen to analyze from the perspective of attitudinal equivalence. The theory underpinning this report is Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL).SFL is composed of three meta-functions of language: ideational, interpersonal and textual,in which translation should achieve equivalence.Language users establish and maintain interpersonal relationship via the interpersonal function of language.James Martin presented Appraisal Theory on the basis of Systemic Functional Linguistics in 1990 s.Appraisal Theory is an extension theory and an essential part of interpersonal function. As a standard of translation, evaluation pays attention to faithful reappearance of the source author's attitude, emotional intensity and values.Attitude is the core of Appraisal Theory. It evaluates on communicative participants and process from perspective of emotional reaction and value system. This report analyzes the Attitude Meaning in source text and translated text of excerpts, and lists typical examples of each subcategories to illustrate how to achieve attitudinal equivalence as well as its significance.Attitude translation is not limited to rigid equivalence. It needs flexible transform according to context and cultural discrepancy.Attitudinal equivalence can make sure that target texts deliver the real attitude of original authors and achieve the alignment between target readers and original authors. This report is made up of five parts. The first part gives a brief introduction of the background and significance.Part two is the task description introducing the project,as well as the preparation before translating, its translating process and difficulties in the translating process as well as difficulties in the translating process.Part three gives a brief introduction of Attitude Meaning and its application in translation.Part four is the part of case study. It lists several typical examples with different Attitude Meanings and analyzes them from the equivalence of Attitude Meaning. The last part is the conclusion of the report, including major findings, limitations and suggestions for future studies.
