With the invention of the internet,as well as the new technological advance in communication and digital materials, translation and learning have started to take another path, which are more automatic, and which lead to the birth of Machine Translation(MT).Machine Translation,a technique, develops fast and has become of paramount importance in our life due to its easy access to information.Although MT offers translators convenience to make the translating process energy-saving and cost-efficient,these resources fail to guarantee a degree of expected precision and it is often faced with a challenge to keep quality with its products. In this thesis,an error analysis study of Online Machine Translation will be represented. It intents to provide kind of information for effective work in the process of Machine Translation.According to the theory, translation error is multidimensional. It is not simply the consequence of defective translation but an inevitable fact derived among many other reasons.Of broad categories of translation errors, there are the more fundamental related to semantics, lexical, syntactical or register as well. While it cannot be eliminated, translation error can be minimized if we take a serious look at these errors and find out solutions to them. The thesis is designed as follows. The first chapter is to introduce the background of MT historically and significantly.Chapter two is a literature review, where machine translation is specifically defined, and the three most commonly used online MT tools Youdao,Baidu, and Google are presented--,notably,the very source where the samples are drowned from and the error analysis is based on.Doug Arnold MT theory and his statement of four MT limitations are reviewed as well.Chapter three is the focus of the thesis, where errors in classification are enumerated and identified at large under the frame of lexical, syntactical and semantic level.Chapter four is to offer some suggestions regarding the MT quality improvement.Chapter five is the final section, where the results and findings are interpreted respectively and discussed fully;its implication and limitation are addressed globally, and finally speculative suggestions for the further researchers are expressed. It is author's hope that this personal work on translation error analysis will help to shape the strategy to make it more useful for the purpose of MT researchers.
