A Report On The Project Of E-C Translation Of Engineering Specifications For Sichuan Hyundai Motor Company

With the progress of China's globalization,more and more products are pouring from foreign countries into China,which increases the demand of English-Chinese translation of product specifications.Although the characteristics of English specifications are similar to Chinese specifications,such as standard language,simple expression and involvement of professional knowledge,etc.Still,it is not easy to translate the English specifications into Chinese,especially for those technical specifications.On the one hand,lots of professional knowledge are involved,which is a challenge for most translators.On the other hand,there are not many related references both at home and abroad currently.In view of the above-mentioned facts,the author takes the translation project of English specifications-Engineering Specifications issued by Sichuan Hyundai Motor Company as an example to study the translation of English technical specifications.Sichuan Hyundai Motor Company has introduced two commercial vehicles which are expected to officially enter the domestic market in 2016.The author takes on the translation work of Engineering Specifications of all sorts of components and parts.The translation project involves 49 English Engineering Specifications in total.In the translation process,the translator encounters many difficulties and challenges,among which terminology and imperatives sentences translation are the most significant ones.To solve these problems,the author studies the respective characteristics of Chinese and English terminology and imperative sentence first.Then on the basis of careful reading of Engineering Specifications,the author analyzes the characteristics of terminology and imperative sentence emphatically and determines Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory as the theoretical framework.Under the theoretical guidance,the author chooses paraphrasing,transliteration,amplification and some other techniques to render a relatively successful translation.Lastly,the author proposes several suggestions about how to translate the similar sort of engineering specifications and scientific and technical texts.The report on the English-Chinese translation of Engineering Specifications for Sichuan Hyundai Motor Company is divided into five chapters in total.The first chapter introduces the overall project;the second chapter describes the translation process;the third one introduces the major challenges and translation techniques applied in the project;the fourth chapter is project evaluation and the last one puts forward four suggestions for translation of engineering specifications.The report aims to explore some better techniques in English-Chinese translation and improve the translation quality of engineering specifications and scientific and technical texts.The author sincerely hopes this report could enlighten those translators who are doing or will do related projects.
