At present,teaching Chinese as a foreign language is mainly language teaching oriented,while content of cultural teaching is relatively less.In recent years,although there are many cases of using multimedia video material to have cultural teaching in the class of teaching Chinese as a foreign language,there are few studies and practice which take the Chinese cultural documentary as the object.This situation needs to be changed.This paper analyzes and summarizes the connotation and advantages of the Chinese cultural documentary,and thinks that the Chinese cultural documentary has such features as being entertaining,realistic and objective,and popular and practical,which can show the Chinese culture more truly and make the students understand and master the Chinese culture more easily,inspire their learning interest,and improve the initiative of learning(especially joining in the classroom discussions).In terms of the documentary content,Chinese cultural documentary can be divided into six categories such as historical civilization,daily life,regional diet,natural customs,folk art,humanities and social sciences,which should be classified and used coordinately in teaching.But due to the contents of different documentaries are often overlapped,we should be more flexible rather than being too rigid when selecting the feature documentary category.Through investigation and practice,the author finds that more and more Thai schools have equipped with multimedia equipment,which offers more favorable hardware conditions for applying Chinese cultural documentary into the classroom.Although most Thai students learn Chinese language and culture because of their parents’ requirements or the need for work and study,their recognition of the Chinese cultural documentary is relatively high.They think that the documentary has a positive effect in many respects such as their own life communication,understanding the new words and grammar under a real language environment,understanding Chinese culture and improving hearing ability.However,at present,in the class of Teaching Chinese in Thailand,teachers who take the initiative to use Chinese cultural documentary are generally fewer,even though some teachers have used,they often neglect to select or clip the documentary and are unable to control the time and frequency of using the documentary,which causes the classroom effect is under expected,thus further deepening other teachers’ bias for the value of applying Chinese cultural documentary in teaching.Correspondingly,Thai students prefer the teachers to choose more vivid documentary works,in the premise of knowledge-based,teachers can design classroom teaching more properly in order to meet their needs for inspiring learning interest and improving learning competence through the Chinese cultural documentary.According to the results of investigation,the analysis of interviews and related basic theories,this paper puts forward some preliminary suggestions on the applying Chinese cultural documentary into Teaching Chinese in Thailand:teachers should know the needs of students and their knowledge levels,select the appropriate audience for teaching;teachers should focus on different teaching content and choose corresponding documentary based on different students’interest;teachers should respect cross-cultural communication conflicts,improve their own cultural accomplishment,find the right teaching methods,and correctly guide students to learn in the class;and teachers should also,based on the needs and feedback of the students,select the content that is easy to learn from the documentary and edit the similar content from different documentaries,arrange classroom progress properly and attract the attention of students so as to deepen the classroom effect and improve teaching quality.
