The Narration On Musical Life Of Shanghai Concession

On 29th November 1845,Gong Mujiu of the Qing Government official with George Balfour,who was the British consul released jointly The Shanghai Land Regulations,Britain,France and the U.S.A demarcated respective residential district for businessmen one after the other,which became the concession.British Concession and American Concession merged into the Shanghai international Settlement in 1863.After that,these concessions' land scope expanded constantly,foreigners building in these concessions,invested public utilities,established education and ran newspapers,promulgated a series of administrative regulations,constructed a hometown in an alien land.Under the circumstances,Henry Shearman,who is a English merchant,founded North China Herald,which grew out of North China Daily News on 30th August 1850 in Shanghai,until the newspaper's closure in March 1951,had been 101 years,and that is the first newspaper that foreigner set up in China,also is the most influential and the longest foreign language newspaper.As the semi-official newspaper of the Shanghai international Settlement,North China Daily News transmitted information from Britain to those British who came to Shanghai as well as reported various kinds news and business information in China,almost included whole contents of theirs daily life.As a consequence,North China Daily News,in a manner of speaking,is the written form of the Shanghai international Settlement's life,and the comprehensive products of various kinds of demands of politics,economy,society and even culture consumption,provides first-hand data for us to know and research the situation of musical condition of Shanghai international Settlement.This thesis take decennial(1927-1937)musical advertisement of North China Daily News as research objects,and proceeds with business perspective to discuss the music in the concession,and the psychic activity of foreigners through those musical advertisements.
