Abstract/Summary:
The research object of this paper is Piano Sonata No.9(op.103),composed by the Russian composer Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev(1891-1953).In this paper,I will give a brief introduction to the composing background and stylistic features of the music, and upon the basis of its analysis deal with the question as to how it should be played. The nine piano sonatas written by Prokofiev play an important part in piano music literature and accordingly have their own specific values.Among them, the most frequently played and researched are the three War Sonatas. However,Piano Sonata No.9,around which this paper revolves, does not receive its due attention, which is one of the reasons why it becomes the topic of my paper.I hope that with relative researches done and the piece more frequently performed, more acquaintance will be made with it.Piano Sonata No.9 was written during 1947 and published in 1955,which was dedicated to the celebrated Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter(1915-1997).Featuring the natural, introspective idea of New-simplicity,this piece is marked by its combination of both tradition and innovation. This paper is segmented into four parts:in the Introduction,I will demonstrate the reason why this sonata is selected as my topic, the literature review of the paper, its writing logic and the way it is constructed;in Chapter 1,the composing background and the stylistic features of the piece will be summarized;Chapter 2 will be focused on the analysis of the music, where the distributive characteristics will be discussed of its musical form, harmony, and musical texture;based on the analysis above,Chapter 3 and 4 are responsible for dealing with the playing of the music.
