A Report On The Translation Of Chapter Four Of Roman Law And The Origins Of The Civil Law Tradition:Translation Of Passive Sentences From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

This translation report is a discussion and summary of the translation of passive sentences in Chapter 4 of Roman Law and the Origins of the Civil Law Tradition from the perspective of Skopos theory.As one of the English sentence patterns,passive sentences have always been the research object among scholars.However,because of the particular sentence structure,it brings a lot of difficulties for translation of passive sentences.Therefore,how to transfer the original information better and make the target readers truly understand the original meaning has become the significant point of translation of passive sentences.This translation report summarizes and analyzes the features and types of passive sentences in Chapter 4 of Roman Law and the Origins of the Civil Law Tradition,and then explores their translation methods based on the three rules of Skopos theory.This report shows that passive sentences which pay attention to the action should be translated into Chinese non-subject sentences based on the skopos rule;passive sentences which convey objective information should be translated into Chinese active sentences under the guidance of the coherence rule.Based on the fidelity rule,we should keep the passive pattern in Chinese when passive sentences emphasize the passive meaning.Thus,the translation of passive sentences can conform to the reading habit of the target readers on the basis of faithfulness to the source text.
