Richard Schmid is considered as one of the greatest living American realist artists.Learning from his teacher William Mosby,he has inherited European painting achievements in the profound and extensive artistic cultural development for hundreds of years since the Renaissance.He’s an artist who has immense impact on today’s academic realism painting.His painting language,techniques and him as a painter are in-depth studied at the present world.As a professor in the American Academy of Art in Chicago,He had been published plenty of works and teaching materials which exerted extensive influences over China’s contemporary realistic painting.However,in China,sufficient translations works and books of Richard Schmid still appears to fall far short of.Hence,a great space exists for further study and explore of his painting arts and teaching theoriesThis paper analyzed the painting language and teaching system of Richard Schmid,translated and collated the painting technique book Alla Prima(Direct Painting)which is the most important book of Richard Schmid.Besides,it concluded some contents with personal characteristics in painting theories of Richard Schmid based on his works and materials.Chapter one introduces Richard Schmid’s painting language,analyzes his unique understanding of tone values,color and composition in paintings,and separately researched the edges theory of Richard Schmid.Chapter two focuses on the teaching system of Richard Schmid.As an educator of academic realism painting who has highly respected worldwide,Richard Schmid’s teaching methods of painting has stood the test of time and practice extensively.The learning methods of painting He teaches are proved to be effective.has great value to study.Chapter three principally presents Richard Schmid’s t theoretical work Alla Prima(Direct Painting).Combs and studies historical context of direct painting and influences of modern imaging technology over realistic painting,etc.mentioned in Alla Prima(Direct Painting)by translating the book.Chapter four After examines Richard Schmid’s painting,techniques and teaching in a meticulous way,reflects upon the necessity of the existence of realistic painting technique in contemporary era,and explores the significance of reaslistic painting by combining the Technology of digital media drawing art.By study the techniques of the great artist and analyzes his painting materials,techniques and painting theory and Teaching Ideology with a view to having a deeper knowledge of the artist,applying them to personal painting practice’ inheriting and innovating in future creating.
