The thesis attempts to study the principle of syntactic linearity applied in simultaneous interpretation(SI),especially one of the biggest obstacles on the linguistic level in its application, that is,the difficulties in transforming the word order from Chinese into English instantly.Word order is a very important concept in Linguistics, and has drawn much attention in the past decades from linguists. There have been a series of constructive results.both descriptive and theoretical, among which Linguistic Typology proves to deserve due attention.Linguistic Typology is a field of linguistics that studies and classifies languages according to their structural and functional features. It delves into the typological nature of human languages by analyzing the basic order of subject(S).verb(V)and object(O),and the order of attributive, adverbial and linking words. All these variables combine to define the fundamental feature of a certain language, and reflect the systematic differences between languages. The thesis lends a theoretical perspective from Linguistic Typology and studies word orders of Chinese and English and their differences.By doing so.the thesis further summarizes possible difficulties interpreter likely to come across in SI and anticipates corresponding coping methods to save time and mental energy for interpreters. The thesis has also selected a real-life material from a live C-E SI performance in the 2016 New Champion Annual Conference in order to test the relevance of the efforts made by this thesis.Hopefully the analysis in this thesis could somewhat provide a new perspective for the practice and research of the syntactic linearity in SI.
