| The intertextual perspective has been applied to the translation study of many text types since 1990s,but not in religious and philosophical texts.Mere Christianity by C.S.Lewis is a well-known philosophical and religious work that is highly intertextualized with the King James Bible.It has been translated into more than 30 languages since its publication.The first Chinese translation was done by a Hong Kong scholar Yu Yelu in 1995.How does Yu translate these biblical intertextual references and whether his translation has fulfilled the author's intention and retained the original meaning in the target culture is what this thesis endeavors to explore.For this purpose,Hatim and Mason's intertextual translation theory was adopted as the main theoretic framework in this thesis.Through a qualitative analysis combined with the descriptive research method,the most representative examples singled out from this work are carefully examined in a comparative manner.This research concludes that Mere Christianity is intertextualized with the Holy Bible through both manifest intertextuality and constitutive intertextuality,which are demonstrated in capitalization,collage,allusion,quotation,as well as thematic correspondence.However the Chinese translation is found not completely loyal to the intention of the ST author,and the original meaning was sacrificed in the target culture to a certain degree,which violates Hatim's priority principle for intertextual translation.In light of this,the researcher highlights the priority principle of Hatim and Mason,i.e.:to be faithful to the ST author's intention and the meaning of the original text.In the end,suggestions of re-contextualization and cultural compensation are also put forward for future intertextual translation of religious and philosophical texts. |
