A text is the most basic unit of communication. In order to reach efficient communication, cohesive devices must be used in a text.English and Chinese both include many cohesive devices.English and Chinese are from two language families and are different from each other,so their use of cohesive devices are also not the same. Thus,in the process of translation, the effect of cohesive devices should not be neglected.Translators need use appropriate cohesive devices to produce clear and fluent translations. On the basis of the cohesion theories proposed by Halliday and Hasan,Hu Zhuanglin, this thesis employed the research method of case study, collected some typical sentences with cohesive devices as examples. And this thesis analyzed these examples from three aspects, namely reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction and discussed how to better cope with cohesive devices and produce a coherent translation.Through translation practice and analysis, the author came to some conclusions:1.English emphasizes hypotaxis and uses many grammatical devices to realize coherence;Chinese emphasizes parataxis and mostly uses context to produce a coherent text.2.English language tends to avoid repetition of words and thus uses many diverse expressions;Chinese language is accustomed to repetition. Thus,in English to Chinese translation, sometimes translators need to repeat some words to obtain the effect of coherence.3,Cohesive devices are complicated. When the same English cohesion is translated into Chinese, translators may use two different expressions in Chinese.
