The Self-assurance Of Contemporary American Well-educated Housewives-an Analysis Of 21st-Century American TV Series

This paper aims to examine self-assurance of contemporary well-educated American housewives,by analyzing new images of quite a few housewife characters in21st-century American TV series.In these series,well-educated housewives show great self-assurance and confidence,which is completely different from those disappointed and frustrated “Happy Housewives” faked up by American mainstream media in the1960 s criticized by Betty Friedan in the Feminine Mystique.This paper attempts to prove the reasons why well-educated women choose to be housewives.With the development of feminist movements for nearly a century,women not only prove their equal status and working ability as males but also acquire self-assurance in their own ability and value,thus win acknowledgement of the society.Entering into the new century,some working women choose to be stay-at home moms,and show great self-assurance and confidence as housewives.These women have a clear understanding of their identity and value.They attach more importance to the duty of educating children,and believe that their domestic work has the same significance and value as working outside.They believe that being housewives is their own free choice and is only one part of their life plans,not a passively accepted identity forced by society.Meanwhile,nowadays the importance of domestic work is also widely recognized by society,and quite a number of legal and institutional protection and support for housewives are issued.That is why these well-educated housewives enjoy great self-assurance,and have confidence in children’s education and marital relationship.
