Study On The Conflict Dialogue Based On DFS Model

Conflict dialogue refers to the speech act such as arguing,quarreling,and opposingdue to the disagreement of opinion or viewpoint between individuals or groups.This is the objective of this thesis.Many scholars have conducted researches on conflict dialogue from pragmatics,functional linguistics,corpus linguistics,etc.Their researches include the analysis on the generating,developing,ending and mitigated strategies of conflict dialogue.However,most of them only focus on the description of its structural features.No scholars have studied on the cognitive mechanism of conflict dialogue through DialogicSyntax.DialogicSyntax,as a newly-created linguistic theory,establishes a new way to study cognitive linguistics.This thesis tries to analyze the generative mechanism of conflict dialogue by DFS model(Dialogic-Figure-Stance Model)which is established by integrating Dialogic Syntax,Figure-ground theory,and Stance Triangle.This thesis collects70 pieces of conflict dialogue from the Chinese TV play Beijing Youthand Beijing Love Story and theirdialogic syntax structure and cognitive mechanism are analyzed.This thesis consists of five chapters:Chapter One is a general introduction to the study,which includes the study motivation,objectives,methodology,data collection and layout of the thesis.Chapter Two gives a general review of the previous studies on the conflict dialogue and an introduction to the Dialogic Syntax,especially the generative mechanism of dialogue resonance.The shortcoming of the previous studies and the new theory are also revealed.Chapter Three proposes the DFS model by integrating the DialogicSyntax,Figure-ground theory,and Stance Triangle.The necessity of the model is also explained after the analysis of the shortcoming of the three theories.Based on the model,the syntactic features of conflict dialogue and its generative mechanism are analyzed.In conflict dialogue,the subjects evaluate the conflict focus and be positioned.They antagonize with each other by conflict resonance.Then conflict stance is established,and the conflict in dialogue is from the stance.The conversation before this turn is the background information of the conflict focus.The father evaluates the focus and the son's utterance resonates with his father's.Then the conflict stance is established,which produces the conflict.The maintenance of stance also needs conflict resonance.As shown in the table,the two utterance are same in syntactic structure,and are in distinct contract with“?,??”vs“?,?”.This intensifies the conflict between the speakers.Chapter Four analyzes the corpus,and discusses their syntactic,semantic and pragmatic features of them in order to uncover the cognitive mechanism behind conflict talk.Chapter Five concludes the contribution of this thesis,limitation of the study and suggestions for future research.The main findings are listed as follows:Firstly,after analyzing the shortcoming of previous study,we managed to build DFS model to analyze the cognitive mechanism of conflict dialogue.Secondly,this thesis supplements Grice's Cooperative Principle,which is mainly built on semantics.We believe that,in speech communication,both the semantics and the dialogic syntax should be concerned.Besides,in conflict dialogue,the proportion of utterance that resonates is higher than those that don't resonate.This proves that people tend to resonate their utterance in conflict dialogue.Last but not least,we find the data and conclusion after the corpus analysis as follows:???:???????????!??:??????????!In most cases,if the interlocutors adopt more conflict resonance in unit time,the conflict stance will be built faster and the conflict in dialogue will be stronger.
