This research applies a traditional experimental paradigm of familiarization trial and test trial to explore the inner cognitive approach of young children’s selective trust.Based on the well-known object labelling task, the research adapts the original design and procedure to serve the purpose of this experiment, which focuses on how global impression formation influences selective trust under cognitive and social clues. Both experiment 1 and 2 use 3*2(participant’s age * global impression)2-way completely random design.Combining experimentation and interview, the research observes, under cognitive and social clues,(1)if there exists selective trust in 3-to 5-year-old children.(2)how 3-to 5-year-old children differ in selective trust in terms of age.(3)how global impression formation influences selective trust of 3-to 5-year-old children, which means if this formation results in a halo effect in children’s selective trust.(4)how 3-to 5-year-old children’s global impression formation develops as they growing.Research findings are as follows:(1)When performing social tasks under cognitive clues,5-year-old children believe that informants who provide accurate names in familiarization trials would engage in more helping behavior.(2)When performing cognitive tasks under social clues,4-and 5-year old children believe that informants who engaged in helping behavior in familiarization trials are more likely to know names of novel objects.(3)When performing social tasks under cognitive clues,4-year-old children do not use global impression formation spontaneously, however, after the formation is triggered purposely, selective trust phenomenon occurs to them. For 5-year-old children, the ability of intuitively using the global impression formation is further improved, selective trust is then developed.(4)When performing cognitive tasks under social clues,3-year-old children are not initiative to use global impression formation, however, after the formation is triggered purposely, selective trust phenomenon occurs to them. For 4-year-old children, the ability of intuitively using the global impression formation is further improved, selective trust is then developed.5-year-old children have developed selective trust while intuitively using the global impression formation, with such ability reaching the highest level.Major research conclusions are listed as follow:(1)When performing social tasks under cognitive clues, selective trust has founded in 5-year-old children.(2)When performing cognitive tasks under social clues, selective trust has founded in 4-and 5-year old children.(3)When performing social tasks under cognitive clues,5-year-old children have developed selective trust when intuitively use the global impression formation. For 3-to 5-year-old children, the ability of using the global impression formation to process selective trust increases with age.(4)When performing cognitive tasks under social clues,4-and 5-year-old children have developed selective trust when intuitively use the global impression formation. For 3-to 5-year-old children, the ability of using the global impression formation to process selective trust increases with age, with such ability reaching the highest level at the age of 5.
