Translation Practice Report On Product Description Translation From The Perspective Of The Translation-oriented Text Analysis Model

The rapid development of commodities markets has brought a mutually connected world with frequent exchanges,and also increased demand for translation of practical texts.As the foundation of foreign trade and cooperation,product description translation plays an essential role in facilitating exchanges of commodities information.Based on the translation work of TBBZ High Voltage Reactive Power Automatic Compensation Device,this report uses Christiane Nord’s translation-oriented text analysis theoretical model to demonstrate effective methods for resolving two issues during translation practice with several translation cases,including how to defining the translation functions and goals during the preparation process and how to select useful translation skills to achieve the target function of translated text.This report generally consists of four parts: Description of the Translation Task,Description of the Translation Process,Analysis of Translation Cases and Conclusion around this translation practice.As the key part of the whole analysis process,the third part takes an overall view of translation-oriented text analysis model and describes how to apply this theory to translate different types of product descriptions in original text so as to produce a faithful and expressive target text.The translation work of TBBZ High Voltage Reactive Power Automatic Compensation Device is a typically technological product description with the purpose of introducing a targeted product and providing useful instructions and supports for users.Therefore,proper translation strategies are selected in translated text during the practice to achieve anticipated translation goals and meet the clients’ requirements.Then,several translation cases focusing on three types of product descriptions in original text including contents,descriptive introduction and diagrammatic introduction,are used to illustrate how to resolve the problems caused by the differences between Chinese and English with various translation skills of addition,omission,conversion and separation in order to improve the accuracy and readability of translated text.These translation cases provide powerful evidence that Nord’s model of translation-oriented text analysis is applicable to this practice and plays an instructive role in product description translation.
