On The Narrative Features Of Films By Xu Jinglei

Xu Jinglei,as both a director and an actress,is honored as “talented woman”.Since she stepped into the silver screen,she has shot six films including My Father and I(2003),Letter from An Unknown Woman(2005),Dreams May Come(2006),Go LA LA Go !(2010),Dear Enemy(2011)and Somewhere Only We Know(2015).In those six films,she directed and acted by herself,participating in the scriptwriting and later commercial popularizing.Among only a few female directors,she has her unique style,and her works and box office have been attracting large quantities of followers.From artistic films in the early period to commercial film the later period,her works present different narrative forms and image styles.In her works,now only her life experiences are added,but there are also her own thinking and reflection on reality.Her orientation in narrative motif,narrative strategies of text adaptation,narrative paradigm and narrative structures are all of distinctive personalized features.In this thesis,taking Xu’s film works as research objects,the author hopes to seek for the common character from narrative features of Xu’s films based on a detailed analysis of her films in different styles.This thesis is themed by On the Narrative Features of Films by Xu Jinglei.In the first part,through data studies,it summarizes the research overview of Xu’s works at home and abroad,based on which it also analyzes the research significance of the thesis.Then,through qualitative analysis,taking film production of Hollywood films as an example,the author discusses the narrative art connotation of films from different layers.The basic narrative function of films is a complete story design,and the presentation of the story relies on film content and forms.In the second part,in the sequence of time,combined with Xu’s growing environment and life experience,the author has a brief summary of Xu’s works.The main body of the article applies the descriptive research method to analyze the categories of Xu’s texts,focusing on Xu’s film narrative motif,text narrative adaptation,narrative paradigm and narrative structure.In the last part,starting from the film narrative form,it analyzes the audio-visual language in Xu’s films so as to discuss Xu’s unique tendency artistic aesthetics.In this thesis,putting director Xu in the wave of times,it has a deep analysis of Xu’s unique features of creation.Leaving behind the individual analytic forms in the form of single line based on previous works,the author summarizes and evaluates the six works according to different narrative content and forms,trying to have a comprehensive command of Xu’s works from a narrative angle and thus seeking for significance and value from a unique standpoint.
