A.S.Byatt(1936-)is a famous female writer and a distinguished critic and reviewer of the Great Britain. Her most famous work is Possession:A Romance which won 1990 Booker Prize for Fiction and the Irish Times International Fiction Prize.Possession:A Romance is a rich synthesis of different kinds of genres and themes.Byatt’s vigorous feminism in this novel is analyzed fully by other researchers;however, few researchers notice Byatt’s criticism on the elements of radical feminism’s flaws. This thesis analyzes Byatt’s feminist thoughts from three perspectives:Byatt’s inheritance and criticism on feministic elements and her ideal gender relations. This thesis consists of five parts. The first chapter of introduction makes a brief study and introduction of Byatt, the writer of the novel of Possession:A Romance, the novel and the approach, purpose and significance of this thesis. The second chapter is analysis of Byatt’s inheritance of traditional feministic elements of the image of the stereotypes constructions--the images of the mother type, the whore type, and the tppe of lunatic. In the novel Allen is built as the image of mother--angel in the house and the image of an asexual mother.Val is constructed as the image of whore and LaMotte the lunatic.Chapter three exlplores Byatt’s criticism on feministic elements from two perspectives:feministic immoral sexual pursuit by analyzing LaMotte and Leonora’s tragedies and feminist hostile attitude towards men’s world.Byatt criticizes radical feminism by using subversion of patriarchy characters. In the novel Roland as a male is marginalization while Maud as a female is subjectivity. The fourth chapter is Byatt’s ideal gender relations. One is the unification of genders’ soul and body just like the relationship between Roland and Maud. The other is the androgyny of genders’ inter-subjectivity just like the state Roland and Maud finally get in the end of the novel. The last chapter is conclusion. The conclusion is that Byatt’s feministic point of view is rational and open. She not only inherit the good elements of the traditional feministic points of view and criticize the radical points of view, but also improves feministic perspective.Byatt thinks that feminism should correct itself and should be rational so that genders can build harmonious relationship.
