Research On Definition By Philological Dictionary From The Perspective Of Synonym Discrimination

In the definition of philological dictionary,it is required to make a "part of speech interpretation" of the entry,which provides the information about the entry.This paper based on the "Modern Chinese Dictionary"(Seventh Edition)(hereinafter referred to as the "Modern Chinese")and "Modern Chinese Standard Dictionary"(Third Edition)(hereinafter referred to as the "standard"),studies the discrimination between synonyms in philological dictionary,analysis the improper distinction between synonyms and puts forward the corresponding improvement strategy in order to further improve the definition validity of the synonyms in philological dictionary.In the first chapter of this thesis,the purpose and significance of the research on the synonyms in philological dictionary are discussed.At the same time,the paper introduces the researches on the definition of synonyms at home and abroad,points out the development trend of the field at home and abroad,the research contents and methods.The second chapter is based on synonym discrimination makes an analysis of the distinction in the synonym groups from the four levels of semantic value,Semantic domain,grammatical meaning and pragmatic meaning.The four levels are further subdivided into27 details: the focus of the meaning,the weight of the meaning,the style of the meaning,the modal of the meaning,the scope of the meaning,the scope of the use,the category and the functional meaning and so on.Analysis the typical examples of a proper distinction between the synonyms groups in philological dictionary.The phenomenons of low distinction are divided into two categories: the definition is too similar and the definition of the internal member in synonym groups was erroneous.The third chapter explores the reasons for the low distinction phenomenon in the previous chapter: First of all,the scale of the synonym groups is too large and the complexity of the word meaning increases the difficulty of distinguishing between the synonym groups.Secondly,synonym groups often use the synonymous interpretation,which has its own inherent deficiencies.Finally,philological dictionary is different from the thesaurus,the synonym groups are scattered in every corner of the dictionary.therefore,the lack of systematic reference is also an important factor causing the low distinction between synonym groups.The fourth chapter puts forward some strategies to solve the problem of low discrimination.According to the grammatical features of different parts of speech,the paper puts forward some suggestions for the improvement of the low discrimination in the second chapter from the three angles of nouns,verbs and adjectives to further improve the synonyms definition in philological dictionary and improve the distinction between synonym groups.
