This is a project report based on the translation of Sounding the Modern Woman: The Songstress in Chinese Cinema(first three sections in chapter one)written by an American writer—Jean Ma.In this book, the writer shows us how the songstress in Chinese cinema rise to stardom attests to the changing roles of women in urban modernity and the complex symbiosis between the film and music industries. And chapter one situates early sound films within a history of multimedia performance, combining the attractions of the musical stage with cinematic entertainment. This report mainly discusses the difficulties and translation strategies by representative examples based on translation practice. The translation of special items in cinema and the description of film scenes are two major difficulties in this project, and the report comes up with two strategies including emphasis on translator' subjectivity and focus on the culture background of the source text in the process of translation.Through the choice of translation strategies, this report illustrates the translation process and translator's subjectivity in the whole process of translation.
