With the deeper analysis of the integration of the information technology and the English course,different types of modals are widely used in PPT courseware,in which multimodality is one of the main characteristics.It’s a must to carry on a research on multimodality and semiotic resources frequently used in PPT courseware,where text,image,voice and so on are combined for the meaning making.This essay will be devoted to meaning making of PPT for Integrated English course,which is based on metafunctions and genre theory of system-functional linguistics.and guided by multimodal discourse analysis framework created by Mr.Zhang Delu.With 30 “Sflep Cup” award-winning works,this essay will try to find out the genre features and integration of modals and semiotic resources in the genre according to some statistics.Then it will also try to analyze the relations between modals and how they are connected to make meaning in different procedure of PPT courseware.According to the analysis,the author found that the award-winning PPT courseware can be divided into three genre procedures: lead-in,text-learning and post-reading tasks.These procedures are reflected in eight steps such as the presentation of the title,teaching arrangements,lead-in,analysis of the text structure and main ideas,language learning,summary or evaluation,assignment and the end.Text modes,graphic-text integration and audio-text or video-text integration are employed to achieve the ideational,interpersonal and textual meaning in the PPT courseware.The modal integration in the award-winning PPT courseware is mainly reflected in the effect of strengthening,expansion and coordination of the complementary relation,and abstract-concrete effect of the non-complementary relation.Most of the modal integration can construct meaning better,but still some modal resources and modal integration failed to serve meaning-making.The author hopes that this study can bring some reference and guidance to college English front-line teachers when they are making PPT courseware.Thus,teachers can give full play to different modals and the integration of modals accordingto genre structure of multimodal PPT courseware,making and using PPT courseware better and better.
