Nadine Gordimer is a South African woman writer who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1991.Under the social background of racial discrimination and apartheid in South Africa,the issue of anxiety has become a common phenomenon,Gordimer’s works show the political situation of South Africa and the dispute between human destiny and history.She uses her unique experience,extraordinary imagination and superb art to make the most of the anxiety of the main body.This paper is based on Soren Aabye Kierkegaard,Paul Tillick,Rollo May and other philosophers’ anxiety theory,and centered with Nadine Gordimer’s works my son’s story(1990),None To Accompany Me(1994),The Pickup(2002)and Get a Life(2005),helped with other works to explore the anxiety in Gordimer’s works.The main problem of anxiety in Gordimer’s works is closely related to her anxiety experience,such as the humanitarian intellectuals,the experience of divorce and the complex social problems in South Africa.The author starts from the anxiety of Nadine Gordimer,and then from the death and fate of anxiety,meaningless and empty anxiety and anxiety of blame and guilt to explore the anxiety of a life itself.Secondly,due to the works of Gordimer the characters are confused,helpless and anxious in the process of searching for self-identity,solving racial conflicts and seeking the unity of religion and culture,so I tried make an analysis of the works from the point of view of identity,race,religion and culture.Finally,through the concrete analysis of the text,this paper summarizes that the anxiety problem can only be alleviated by resistance,transfer and vent etcetera,but cannot be cleared up,and then deeply discuss the meaning of anxiety.In the conclusion part,the author summarizes the core point of the article,and relations the anxiety with the contemporary social facts,then reveals the contemporary significance of Gordimer’s writing of anxiety.
