A Study On The Construction Of "Zuowei NP,(S)VP"

This paper mainly studies the modern Chinese structure“Zuowei NP,(S)VP”(“??NP,(S)VP”)which is based on the Construction Grammar Theory.It analyzes the construction of the formation,the integration of meaning and its special pragmatic functions based on investigation and analysis of the parts of the construction.It also tries to answer the question how the modern Chinese structure“Zuowei NP,(S)VP”was formed.This paper is divided into five chapters.Chapter 1 presents the purpose and significance of the research.It also analyses the current state and existing problems.Meanwhile,the content,basic research,theoretical methods and corpus source are analyzed.Chapter 2 analyses each part of the construction“Zuowei NP,(S)VP”the unchanging“Zuowei”(“??”),the changing“NP”,“S”,“VP”.“Zuowei”is a preposition,and is used before a noun for introduction and leading purpose.“NP”is a noun,and it describes the object that is introduced into the context.“NP”has rich form and meaning.“NP”and“S”have a containment relationship.“NP”has a strong influence on“VP”.Chapter 3 discusses “Zuowei NP” which provides the background information.It is closely linked to “(S)VP”.The meaning of the structure “Zuowei NP,(S)VP” is to“expressing some expectations to the identity of someone or the characteristic of some thing”.Based on this,it is analyzed into 2 types of meaning: expectation with the right outcome,and expectation with the wrong outcome.Chapter 4 discusses the grammaticalization course of “Zuowei” and the formationmechanism of “NP,(S)VP” from a historical perspective.“Zuowei” at first is a verb.In the grammaticalization process,the part of speech,meaning and syntactic function of it gradually change,finally it becomes a preposition.Its syntactic function was relegated from main verb to preposition.The external factors of grammaticalization process are the Cultural Revolution and the use of foreign words in Chinese language.The structure “Zuowei NP,(S)VP” is formed based on the combination of two simple sentences that are related in their meanings,and the Idealized Cognitive Model.The last chapter is the conclusion of the innovation and inadequacies.
