| This thesis deals with my English-to-Chinese translation project of The Quick And Easy Home DIY Manual-321 Tips.Based on Reiss's text typology theory and its corresponding translation strategies,this thesis discusses my concerns,confusions,techniques,solutions and other reflections concerning the translating process from two angles,namely rigor and humor.Primarily based on the notion of "rigor",the first part talks about the translation of accurate terms and how-to manuals.Terms are words and compound words or multi-word expressions that in specific contexts are given specific meanings.They are expected to be concise and idiomatic,and therefore it is not easy to deal with the conversion between English and Chinese terms.If there is a rule to follow,the author uses the ready-made translation directly.If not,some tweaks are made by the author.A manual,commonly known as a user guide or user's guide,is a technical document intended to give assistance to people using a particular system,which requires the translation to be readable.The second part discusses "humor" form such aspects as the translation techniques of subheadings and introductions respectively.The subheading is a short statement that indicates the content of an article,a work,and so on.It is designed to accurately express the main idea,and therefore the author employs more verbs to make the translation vivid and ingenious.When it comes to the translation of introductions,the author uses verses and Chinese idioms to help imitate and even enhance the original charm.Through the analysis of the translation from "Rigor" and "Humor",this thesis draws the conclusion that translation strategy ensuring the fluency,accuracy and appropriate style of expression should be adopted.All the efforts could provide a meaningful reference for the translation of manuals. |
