In consecutive interpreting(CI),it is common for interpreters to make mistakes and repair them.Based on the Conversational Repairs theory proposed in The Preference for Self-Correction in the Organization of Repair in Conversation by Emanuel A.Schegloff,Gail Jefferson and Harvey Sacks, this thesis studies the monitoring and repairing phenomena in English-Chinese(EC)CI and finds that such phenomena do exist in ECCI.Meanwhile, the thesis proposes a new Interpreting Repairs theory which consists of seven types of monitoring and repairing:self-monitoring,self-repair;self-monitoring,other-repair;self-monitoring,zero-repair;other-monitoring,self-repair;other-monitoring,other-repair;other-monitoring,zero-repair and zero-monitoring,zero-repair.The discourses analyzed in the thesis are the transcript from the ECCI for the Chinese football coaches training program in the U.K.organized by the Federation of University of Sports of China(FUSC),Ministry of Education. It includes the source text of English speakers and target text of interpreters from 187 discourses totaling 14,000 English words and Chinese characters. After analyzing the discourses, the thesis finds, among others,that:(1)there do exist monitoring and repairing phenomena in ECCI,which can be divided into 7 types;(2)reasons and modes of repairing in ECCI are diversified and repairing in itself has advantages and disadvantages;and(3)the proportion of self-repair is higher than the rest. Finally, the thesis makes a few proposals for learning and improving ECCI,hoping to provide insights and guidance to all CI learners in future study and practice.
