An Analysis Of Three Virtues “Faith Hope Charity” In The Summa Theologica

Since the 19 th century,economic and technological development at full speed and its expanding market output.On the one hand,it intensifies the conflict of culture in the world,and at the same time,it also promotes the revival of virtue theory.In this global background,more and more scholars pay attention to Thomas Aquinas’ s Summa Theologica.Because Summa Theologica inherited Aristotle’s virtue theory,and it was a comprehensive expression of virtue theory in the middle age;And it trans Christian thought from "Platon" to "Aristotle",it became the representative of medieval thought.Summa Theologica as a complete system consists of three parts:metaphysics;ethics;and sacrament.In the Summa Theologica’s structure,the "theological virtues" which is composed by "faith","hope" and "charity" is not only the link of three parts in the Summa Theologica,but also constitute the basic of the ethics part in the Summa Theologica.Therefore,research on "theological virtues" is a vital part of study the progress of the virtue theory in the western.It is also the important measure to know that,how the medieval Christian thought become the foundation of popular spiritual life.Based on the above cognition,this paper discuss the faith hope and charity in the Summa Theologica from three levels.First chapter restore Summa Theologica creative background through the research of the history Background of times and personal encounters.And it reveal the position and function of theological virtues in the Summa Theologica.The second chapter analyze the connotation of faith hope and charity by research on their subject,object,generation,specific perspective and value expectation.Through the analysis of the generate order,the complete order,the Primary order and the correlation,The third chapter sort out the relationship between the theological virtues.And echo the question,how the faith hope and charity possibility? Finally,it discuss the way of Summa Theologica respond to the circumstances of times through construct a theological system,which is integrate of faith and reason,theology and Philosophy.
