Yuelu Mountain's Historical Memory Research

Yuelu Mountain is the the first bodhimanda in Hunan province of Buddhism and Dongzhenxu—the twenty-three cave paradise of Taoism,and Yuelu Academy—one of the Four Academies of China is setting in there.And it is the burial ground of revolutionist and martyrs in modern China.Yuelu Mountain is the place which witnessed the religious development of Hunan province,the prosperity of Yuelu Academy and the farewell moment for revolutionist and martyrs,it is the mountain which have had witnessed Changsha's transition and recorded its history.Since from ancient China,Yuelu Mountain is already being a famous scenery in Changsha.Buddhism and Taoism,the religions which have partiality for famous sceneries had chosen Yuelu Mountain to build their temples and to preach their religious beliefs.The famous spots in this mountain such as the ancient Lushan Temple,Daolin temple,Baohuang Cave and Yunlu Temple attracted so many followers and literati,and those people left numerous stories,poems,and inscriptions on tablets in Yuelu Mounta in.After the Yuelu Academy has been built,Yuelu Mountain became the center of Huxiang Culture,and the academy culture with religious culture(which consisted of Buddhism and Taoism)formed the main part of Yuelu Mountain's historical memory before the modern times.Most of those traditional historical memories are individual memories and spatial memories which carried by texts,inscriptions on tablets and architectural relics.Yuelu Mountain's historical memory is constantly enriched and accumulated through the historical development.From the public funerals of Chen Tianhua,Yao Hongye and Yu Zhimo to the state funerals of Huang Xing and Cai E,given a funeral in Yuelu Mountain became the highest stander for Hunan revolutionist.After the martyrs who died for the 1911 Revolution had buried in Yuelu Mountain,the mountain's image and its social influence has become different.The traditional culture(which united Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism as one)mountain has become to a memorial mountain for revolutionist and martyrs,and its memory carriers have more materials and sources.During the War of Resistance Against Japan,Yuelu Mountain is the battlefield,buried place of soldiers and the Red Revolution base.In the meantime,Yuewang Pavilion,Lushan Martyr's Shrine,the Seventy-third Army's Cemetery,the Seventy-seven Division of Seventy-third Army's Monument(especially the soldiers who died in battles during the War of Resistance Against Japan),Changsha Battle Monument,graves of proletarian revolutionist and graves of cultural celebrities has been built in the mountain.The mountain's image became various under the political power and public voices.Besides,its historical memory included much more substance under the public and elite's influence,its commemorative function become prominent by that time.Its historical memory carriers which from the traditional texts,inscriptions on tablets and architectural relics had expanded to photos,images,graves,memorialize constructions and so on.Since then,Yuelu Mountain's historical image finish its transformation from traditional to modern,the mountain has become a historical and cultural mountain,a revolutionary memorial mountain and a patriotic education base,The substance and carriers of Yuelu Mountain's historical memory are both run up to the richest time that have never been reached.Study on the historical memory of Yuelu Mountain,we not only can see Changsha culture's development in the long term of history,but also can find out how the public and the elite made up the historical memory.Analysis the factors that made up the historical memory,we can see the national political power affected the local culture deeply.The purpose of this series of research is to emphasize the important value that Yuelu Mountain's historical memory in Changsha's city memory study,urban history study and relative revolution memory study.And through all of these research,I hope it can awake the public to protect Yuelu Mountain's historical monuments and antiques,and carry those heritage goes down generation by generation.
