A Report On Translation Of Web Pages Of The School Of Marine Science And Technology Of Tianjin University

With the development of communication technology,the Internet has become a major channel for information acquisition and dissemination.Under such circumstance,many Chinese universities have established their English web pages in order to create and boost the image,introduce the system in school organization and school admission,and explicate the principle for communication and cooperation.Since the visitors of English web pages are the faculty of overseas universities,foreign teachers,and students who do not know much about Chinese language and culture,for their possession of the adequate information concerned,we should ensure the quality of web page translation.The practice report is a presentation of the English translation of the web page of the School of Marine Science and Technology of Tianjin University.Through the analysis of examples extracted from the translated text and based on Toury's theory of translation norms,the author discusses how to solve problems encountered in the translation.The practice report includes four parts.Part 1 is a description of the background and purpose of the task,the source and requirement of the task,and types and features of the source text.Part 2 outlines the task of preparation,translation process and proofreading.In Part 3,through case analysis,the author discusses the initial norm adopted in web page translation and translation skills that reflect the operational norm at lexical level and sentence level.The author draws the following conclusions: Terminologies should be literally translated according to target language norms for their accuracy of renderings;words related to history and culture should be translated by the method of free translation in order to enhance the acceptability of the translation;Chinese neologisms should be paraphrased for the preservation of the flavor of Chinese culture.Regarding sentence translation,the author respectively employs sequential translation,reverse translation,sentence division,sentence combination,and the transformation of active and passive voice according to the sentence characteristics.Part 4 contains a reflection of the translation practice and a summary of essential qualities of a qualified translator.The author hopes that this report can be a reference for web page translation.
