After World War II,Australia drew lessons from the war,and decides two foreign policies based on its geographical environment,cultural tradition and development needs.On the one hand,Australia tried to establish a rapport with the United States to ensure its defense security,and keep the traditional relationship with Britain.On the other hand,Australia tried conveying goodwill to Asian countries to promote domestic economic development by economic cooperation.But there were sometimes collisions between two foreign policies.So how to make a balance of these policies had been becoming the effort direction of successive Australian government.The Asian region had set off a new wave of anti-colonialism,and had been one of the minority areas where the hot wars were breaking out in the Cold War period.After based on a careful consideration of its diplomatic situation and domestic anti Communist situation,Australian government decided to promote the Colombo Plan which ever was controlled by Commonwealth of Nations.By financial assistance,technical cooperation,education training and cultural propaganda,Australia affected recipient countries' politics and economy.This plan promoted these countries' economic development at the same time that enhance their ability of resisting communism.Australia joined the plan as a donor country,and it was the most active country when the plan was drawn up and implemented.Australia wanted to strengthen the cooperation with the United States and its allies,but Australia didn't hope that Britain loses its influence in Asia.Beyond that,Australia try to improve relations with Asian countries through the Colombo Plan.Australia hoped to enhance the influence by cooperating with the United States,Britain and Asian countries under the Colombo Plan.Australia government carried out the Colombo plan because of the consideration to Australiannational interests.Australia attempted to ensure its defense security by using the plan to contain the development of communism in Asia,especially in Southeast Asian emerging countries.The recipient countries achieved economic recovery with the aid of Australia,and formed a resource-intensive economic development model.The resource-intensive economy in these countries was complementary with Australia and could bring obvious economic benefits to Australia.Furthermore,by the Colombo Plan,Australia changed the notional image,increased the international status and improved relations with Asian countries successfully.By the way,Australia abolished the notorious White Australia Policy under the influence of the Colombo Plan.
