Abstract/Summary:
The pottery Ding was one of the common types of pottery in the Neolithic period, which ranged widely in many areas with different developments.Hubei and Hunan provinces were the important distribution areas of pottery Dings, but there isn’t enough special research on that.Based on the development of archaeological work and the accumulation of archaeological materials since twenty Century, this thesis sets the body of pottery Ding and the foot shape as the classification standard to conduct a classification system.Meanwhile,on that basis,it also works on the type division which divides the pottery Ding into the cauldron shaped Ding A,the tank-shaped Ding B,and the basin-shaped Ding C,and analyzes the development of shape and type from simple to complex.Based on the study of pottery Ding types, through the investigation of various types of prehistoric pottery Ding coexistence between Hubei and Hunan Provinces, this thesis divides the evolution process into three stages and six phases.Ding A and B appears in the first phase,Ding C being in the second phase. In prehistoric times, the Ding A mostly located in the lower reaches and middle reaches of Hanjiang River, while the Ding B spread in the lower reaches of Hanjiang River and Dongting Lake, and the Ding C was distributed in the lower reaches and middle reaches of Hanjiang River.During the process of development, the prehistoric pottery Ding in Hunan and Hubei was initially influenced by Central Plains culture.Thereafter,to a certain extent,it was influenced by the culture in the lower reaches of Yangtze River. The emergence and development of the prehistoric pottery Ding in Hunan and Hubei generally reflected the geographical evolution trend from North to South, showing the characteristics of the process of "accepting--imitation--innovation".The pottery Ding is an important carrier of the early cultural interaction between Hunan and Hubei. It not only shows its spreading characteristics from North to South, but also reveals the formation process and characteristics of Chinese prehistoric culture from multi-elements to unifications.
