Time deixis is used in discourse to indicate information about time, which usually takes the speaker as the center.Time deixis is an important line of logic in the development of things and holds the key to discourse’s coherence.Nothing to be Frightened of is a memoir written by a modern English writer,Julian Barnes. There are many instances of time deixis in this material and these deictic expressions will be classified in this thesis. Also, typical cases in translation practice will also be studied from the perspective of Translation Equivalence Theory to prove that this theory is applicable to time deixis translation.According to Catford, the meaning of text can be understood through formal items and context items and translation is actually to replace source language(SL)text with target language(TL)text. To achieve translation equivalence, translators need to make sure that the SL text can be replaced by TL text in specific context, which means the meaning of SL text is equal to that of TL text.By this principle, translator should give full consideration to both formal meaning and context meaning of texts. The SL text should be understood from these two perspectives and the TL text should be constructed with these two factors, too.Translators should try to make their meaning correspond to each other in specific text and bridge them properly. |
