Chen Yinque believes that the new materials are not something born with, but refer to new findings or something hidden in other places or the old materials added with new notes and interpretations. In Chinese history of calligraphy, there are three periods of new materials' explosion-Song Dynasty,Qing Dynasty and the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. In the period of Qianlong and Jiaqing, the popularity of epigraphy and textology increased scholars' attentions and interests to searching steles at that time.A number of calligraphers also started to pay attention to the inscription calligraphy of Qing Dynasty,Han Dynasty,Wei,Jin and six Dynasties.Under the advocate of Ruan Yuan and Bao Shichen, this trend became a fad of stele study in Qing Dynasty, which broke the monopoly of model calligraphy thus brought infinite vitality for the calligraphy art in Qing Dynasty. In the late Qing Dynasty, the discoveries of oracle, bamboo slips of Han Dynasty and Jin Dynasty and Dunhuang documents not only broadened the scope of epigraphy but also erased the boundaries between stele and model, leading to a new road of combining stele with model.Based on the example of Shen Zengzhi, the thesis will explore Shen's attitude to Liu Sha Zhui Jian(a famous archaeology books)in terms of his thought, friend circle, ink mark and calligraphy style, and then to illustrate the influence of new materials' appearance on calligraphers.
