| The Economist,which began its publication in London,is an authoritative English language weekly that emphasizes on financial reportage and has been attracting people's attention all the time.China Daily,as the most influential English newspaper in our country,is an important medium for Chinese people to know the world and for the world to learn about China.These two kinds of newspapers share some similarities,because they set a special column to cover financial news.Based on cohesion theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan,the author uses FNCD and FNE as research subjects and makes a comparative study of grammatical cohesion.The author firstly establishes FNCD corpus and FNE corpus with a total of 102190 tokens and 103275 tokens respectively,and then employs AntConc to calculate the frequencies of different types of grammatical cohesive devices.Moreover,SPSS is adopted in this thesis to examine whether there is a significant difference in the use of grammatical cohesive devices between FNCD corpus and FNE corpus.Then a preliminary exploration to the possible reasons for the differences is made accordingly.After comparison,it is found that the grammatical cohesive devices in both corpora are mainly reference and conjunction,but the frequencies of the four types of grammatical cohesive devices in FNCD corpus are obviously fewer than those in FNE corpus.Moreover,the frequencies of personal reference and adversative conjunction in FNCD corpus are fewer than those in FNE corpus,which can be attributed to the differences of Chinese thoughts and language habit.Meanwhile,less use of substitution and ellipsis in both corpora can make passages more accurate and easier to understand in the coverage of financial news.The result.of this thesis can both help Chinese journalists and readers understand grammatical cohesive devices in financial news,and can help them read and write English financial news effectively.And it may also help translators master some skills in translating English financial news. |
