Carving Smartly Modern Figures From Crude Stones-Research On Shoushan Stone Carving Of Huang Lijuan

Huang Lijuan,born in Luoyuan, Fujian in 1958, is a famous master of Shoushan stone carving and the first female Master of Arts and crafts of China in Shoushan Stone Carving. She dropped out of junior middle school and entered into Luoyuan Carving Factory as a craftsgirl studying Chinese traditional carving skills when she was only 14 years old. Through the college entrance examination. Huang Lijuan attended Fujian Arts and Crafts School Department of Sculpture and studied western aesthetics systematically in 1978. She worked in Luoyuan Film Distribution and Exhibition Corp as an art designer, drawing film poster, studying figure creation and color matching after graduation in 1981. Huang Lijuan resigned from Luoyuan Film Distribution and Exhibition Corp and engaged in Shoushan Stone Carving only since 1993. Huang Lijuan originated the theme of Shoushan Stone Carving---modern female figures.Most of them are children,urban girls, minority women and African women. The works are strong feel of modern times and breath of life. Nowadays, she is the voice of theme of modern female figures. She expands Shoushan stone that gives crude stone new value, and breaks the rule of absolute good stone that changes the tradition of "emphasising stone and belittling craft". At the same time,she goes further on this basis,namely,taking advantage of color stone. Huang Lijuan’s advantagement in Shoushan stone has to do with her talent,hardwork and her time and space. The thesis studied the features and achievement of Shoushan Stone carving of Huang Lijuan,which provides enlightment for the inheritance and innovation of Fuzhou Shoushan Stone carving.
