Lin Shu lived during a remarkable period between the late Qing and early Republic in China’s history. It underwent an extreme shift in its economic and political systems, as well as in cultural thoughts. This shift was not a one-way, but in a pluralistic multi-dimensional way of unfolding. This thesis, based on Lin Shu’s life, focuses on his artistic activities after settling in Beijing, the time before and after the Xinhai Revolution. It takes Lin Shu’s literati paintings as its main part, and interprets some specific images from a cultural perspective, to shape him. It also investigates Lin Shu’s artistic activities in a particular cultural field in Beijing by examining his paintings. It endeavors to present a literary figure, being influenced by pluralistic visions and various strengths. |
