For “his powerful and unique artistically contribution to American novel,” Faulkner won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949.He published Sanctuary in 1931 which used to be his most popular novel. In this novel,he embodies the space narrative to transform the fiction narrative and his theme. This paper is to appreciate the creation of Sanctuary from three angles of space narrative,Heterotopia, space narrative techniques and subjectivity based on Foucault's Heterotopology and space narrative. It aims at revealing Heterotopic space narrative mode and Faulkner's creative narrative techniques through the exploration. This thesis is composed of :Chapter one is an introduction of William Faulkner and Sanctuary, providing a literary review on Sanctuary at home and abroad.Chapter two analyzes Sanctuary in details based upon Michel Foucault's six principles of Heterotopology, including multiple cultures, different symbolizing meanings of spaces, spaces transformation,Heterochronies,opening/closing systems, juxtaposed spaces and spaces of illusion.Chapter three illustrates space narrative techniques in Sanctuary. After analyzing non-linear narrative, juxtaposition and repetition of images,we can find Faulkner give readers new attempts to reconstruct in the text.Clues of Temple and Horace and segments appear discontinuously through non-linear narrative, which make readers get involved in mapping. The two paralleling stories of Temple and Horace are juxtaposed to enrich and extend text significance, evolvable in space narrative. The repetition of the Old Frenchman place hints the ruined and destined evil. Thus the space narrative techniques, which are like excellent blueprint and building, make the narration more vivid and solid.Furthermore, the space narrative techniques exhibit Sanctuary's space narrative strategies, which are fused with Heterotopia.Chapter four explores the subjectivity based on space narrative. The body is the earliest space used to write the spatial meaning of social orders.Characterization and space are interrelated and interactive. All the abnormal thirst, female consciousness,self-realization,degraded human nature originate from the border of Yoknapatawpha County-the Old Frenchman place(see its position in Faulkner's map),wriggling to break through the order.Actually, everyone cannot castrate his/her own born identifiability, which is embedded by Heterotopic space. This thesis holds that Heterotopic space mode exists not only in Sanctuary, but also in Faulkner's other works.Space is not merely physical conception, immobile and single, instead, influencing by knowledge, power, characters and so on.The space is productive and responded,in which various relationships are mingled with each other.Faulkner's brilliant narrative strategies perfectly express Heterotopic nature in works, the old south, and then the universe.
