The concept of “context” was first put forward by Malinowski in 1923.As the development of linguistics,the context theory attracted more and more domestic scholars' attention and was widely applied to many fields of linguistic research.“Translation”,as the basic competence of language,was also focused by scholars in recent years.In the new CET-4,the translation item changed from sentence translation to paragraph translation,which increased the difficulty of the test.For quite some time,it is difficult for teachers to improve students' translation competence with the traditional method.According to the current situation of English translation teaching,the researcher attempts to build a new translation teaching model based on the context theory,in order to improve students' translation achievements and promote the quality of the college English translation teaching.Taking the translation test as an example,the research aims at testifying whether the translation teaching model based on the context theory can affect students' translation competence,and answers four questions:(1)What is the current situation of non-English major students' translation competence?(2)How does the researcher build college English translation teaching model based on the context theory?(3)Can translation teaching model influence students' translation achievement? Is it more effective than traditional method to develop students' ability in vocabulary,grammar and textual cohesion?(4)Can the translation teaching method based on the context theory change students' attitudes and habits in translation training for non-English major students?The participants in this empirical study are 80 freshmen from Shenyang Normal University.They are assigned to two administrative classes randomly,and one is selected as the experimental class randomly and the other is the controlled class.The experimental class adopted the college English translation teaching model based on the context theory,and the controlled class used the traditional translation teaching model.This experiment lasts one-semester.The instruments of the study are questionnaire,the English translation tests and the interview.After the experiment,the researcher collected all the data and analyzed it with SPSS 18.0.After the experiment,compared with the students in controlled class,the students in the experimental class have improved their performance greatly,especially in vocabulary,grammar and cohesion,and they also changed their learning attitudes and habits about translation.Therefore,the translation teaching model based on the context theory can provide theoretical foundation for students' translation exercise by building the new translation teaching model,improve the current teaching situation and enhance students' translation competence.This study will supply some favorable reference and enlightenment for the future translation teaching in the college.
