A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of International Conference Documents

The quality of translating international conference documents is very important.If effective communications and exchanges between the participating countries can not be achieved,it is impossible for the countries to reach an agreement that the purpose of the meeting can not be achieved.The text chosen for this translation report comes from a proposal of Facilitation Committee(FAL)40th session in the International Maritime Organization(IMO),which is around 12000 words with complete content and structure.Functional equivalence is the core concept of the famous American linguist and translator,Eugene Nida's translation theory.“Functional Equivalence” requires in translation that the functions of the two languages are equal but not the equal of words only.From the perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory,this report discusses the problems the author encountered during the translation of a proposal of conference,and possible solutions.According to the analysis of the lexical,syntactical and other aspects,this paper summarizes the characteristics of the original text,and expounds from the aspects of the principles,applications and criteria of the functional equivalence theory.The case analysis method is used to carry out the translation research.By applying the theory in translation practice,this report has gained translation strategies.By analyzing the features of the original text,the author finds that the words are concise and indeterminable.Besides,much long sentences and passive sentences make the translation more difficult.With cases analysis,it expounds the application of translation strategies including addition,lexical conversion,and conversion of voice under the guidance of functional equivalence theory to solve the difficulties.The implications is given after the analysis.And then the author makes a summary of the whole translation report and gives some suggestions.
